Flags flying in Leavenworth

We love Leavenworth! Sorry if you think we’re beating a dead horse over here, but them’s the facts, ma’am. We’ve had loads of people ask us, “Why do you love Leavenworth so much?” That question can be answered in so many ways. Here are just a few:

We love the mountains. We live on the edge of the mountainous region of Eastern Washington. We love our home in the Spokane area, but when we travel west we feel truly at home as we pass through the sage land of the Columbia Basin and then up Highway 2 to the Eastern Slope of the Cascade Mountains. Leavenworth is nestled in those mountains. We breathe easier and relax the longer we’re there.

Leavenworth is familiar to us. Having visited many times over three decades we know it, and we’re homebodies at heart. And yet, for all its familiarity, we never cease to discover new places and experiences that often become new favorites. This past Christmas season we “discovered” the Living Nativity program at Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene. It was an impressive program and the church folks hosting it were warm and friendly. We’ll make sure we go again. You can read all about it in a previous post.

We enjoy the people of Leavenworth. There are many people we have made the acquaintance of, and enjoy visiting with. The fine folk at the Chamber of Commerce are always friendly and a wealth of information about what’s happening in Leavenworth. They man the visitor center seven days a week. Stop in for a cup of coffee and find out what’s happening and what’s new in town. And for more of what’s really happening in Leavenworth, we stop at the Black Swan T-shirt and novelty shop. We talk with Karen Folden if she’s in (and she usually is.) She’s such a trove of information that her business cards bill her as “Miss Information.” And we always stop at the Fudge Hut for fudge.

We like shopping in Leavenworth, supporting their local economy. There are shops we would never dream of missing in Leavenworth. The Cheesemongers Shop is one. The Cheesemongers Shop moved in 2008 to a much bigger shop and now offers many more cheeses and meats that ever before. But what brings us back to the shop is the friendly and knowledgable service. The shop is always staffed with bright and enthusiastic young people who never fail to greet each and every customer and offer samples right off the bat. We have favorite cheeses we buy every visit, like Vintage Gouda, smoked Gouda, horseradish cheddar and fruit studded Stiltons. We enjoy trying new cheeses and perusing the shop filled with cheese related products, imported and local wine and beer, and picnic accoutrements. A new place we love stopping at is the Oil & Vinegar Cellar in The Cheesemonger’s old digs. This year we shipped some of Taelor’s flavor infused oils and vinegars for Christmas gifts. They’re delicious.

With all these things to love about Leavenworth how do we pick who or what deserves our designation of Leavenworthy? To see what we’ve named Leavenworthy in the past click here. We look for businesses, individuals, organizations or events that are extra cool, provide outstanding and friendly customer service or go above and beyond in representing the best of Leavenworth. This time around, we’re naming The Cheesemonger’s Shop “Leavenworthy. We’ve been shopping there for many years and wouldn’t dream of traveling to or through Leavenworth without stopping. If we’re having a a picnic we stop for sliced meats and cheeses and refreshing drinks. But most of all they’re Leavenworthy because they’re a locally owned business, providing world-class gourmet product, with fantastic small-town service. Shop at The Cheesemonger’s Shop for imported and domestic cheese, cured meat and Bavarian products like stollen, sauerkraut, cookies and mustard.

The Hills Are Alive!

A beautiful evening for outdoor theater

Today box office ticket sales begin for the 2011 Leavenworth Summer Theater Season. The three shows in this summer’s season are: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music.

My day-job is in theater. I’ve worn just about every hat there is in the Spokane theater community: designer, actor, director, stage manager, back-stage crew, PR, props master, and at the present time, costumer. I love theater. Like a lot of children, many of my earliest memories are of planning, directing and performing my own plays for whomever I could make sit down long enough to watch. Apparently, unlike most children, I never really grew out of my stage aspirations.

My children are grown now, but our family spent many, many hours working together in classes and productions for Christian Youth Theater, Spokane.

I don’t just love doing theater, I love seeing theater. On several occasions Scotte and I (Fritzi and Mitzi) have had opportunity to include theater performances in our travel plans. We’ve watched The Lion King in Toronto, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth in Stratford, Ontario, A Winter’s Tale in Washington D.C., Cirque d’ Soleil in Santa Monica, and street theater in Italy (Epcot!). One of our most memorable theater experiences has been Leavenworth Summer Theater’s The Sound of Music.

We’ve had the chance to see productions of both A Christmas Carol and most recently The Sound of Music.

Last July we had the chance to see The Sound of Music for the first time. In the past we’ve either not been in Leavenworth during show weeks, or missed a show because it was sold out or we couldn’t work out our travel schedule to match performance nights. Last summer we decided not to let all those things stop us. We planned our trip dates just so we could see The Sound of Music. Boy were we glad we did.

The night was beautifully clear. We arrived at the Ski Hill parking area while it was still daylight. It takes about 20 minutes to park and walk up the hill to the Amphitheater. The walk isn’t strenuous, but we were glad we’d left plenty of time to take it easy and enjoy our stroll. There is accommodation for those who require transportation to the top of the trail.

We rented seat pads for $1 and were glad we had. The seating is on folding chairs. We also made sure to dress in layers and took jackets with us. The day had been warm, but once the sun set the air cooled quickly. The cast and crew of the theater acted as ushers. We had good seats. The seating area is small. There aren’t any bad seats.

Leavenworth Summer Theater has been performing The Sound of Music for many years and the practice shows. Every year actors are hired via auditions from both the community and outside of Leavenworth. It’s great to see actors of every age and background working together in this community theater. If you’re lucky enough to see more than one show, you’ll see familiar faces, as the shows are performed in rep (all three shows shown in rotation.)

From the moment Maria sings The Hills Are Alive… in the light of the setting sun on the hillside above the stage I had chills. I remember thinking, “This is how this play should be seen.”

We enjoyed the play from start to finish. One unplanned moment that the whole audience was delighted by was when, during a set change, a chipmunk ran out from a piece of scenery and scampered across the stage. It was fun. That’s what live theater is about! We loved our evening at The Sound of Music so much that we handed our 2nd Leavenworthy award to Leavenworth Summer Theater.

This summer make sure you see The Sound of Music or one of the other shows the Leavenworth Summer Theater is performing this year. Box office ticket sales begin today. Call them (509) 548-2000) or stop by the box office. They don’t do mail orders for tickets.

Fourth “Leavenworthy” award

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

We wanted to find a way to reward people or businesses who show the true spirit of Leavenworth. We have deemed them “Leavenworthy“. It is not an award you can apply for, it must be earned. When we come across people or businesses we think have gone above and beyond, we will list them here and provide them with a picture and link they can use on their website to advertise that we consider them Leavenworthy.

Our fourth Leavenworthy award goes to Dream House Suites.

We stayed at Dream House Suites for one night of our last stay. It was a new room that had just been completed. It was a great little suite with a shared balcony where we ate breakfast. The thing that was Leavenworthy was not just the room though, but the service. When we first booked the room, the proprietress asked when we would arrive. We were scheduled to get in before the normal check-in time. We were told to call when we got into town to see if it was ready. Even before we got into town she called us to let us know everything was ready early and we could just go straight to the room when we got to town. Now that’s definitely Leavenworthy service.

Third “Leavenworthy” Award

Our third Leavenworthy award goes to Fudge Hut. Fudge Hut is one of our favorite places to go in Leavenworth. Every time we go, we need to get our fudge fix. The on-going Fudge Hut in-store special is to buy a pound of fudge and get a half-pound free. This time we brought home 3 pounds of fudge! Two things that were Leavenworthy: Fudge Hut changes the types of fudge they make depending on the season, and the key lime fudge. It was the first time we’d had key lime fudge and it didn’t last very long.

Wenatchee World recently ran an article about them and their recently expanded Bakery Creations section.

Fudge Hut is a Leavenworth staple and definitely Leavenworthy.

Second “Leavenworthy” award

Our second Leavenworthy award goes to Leavenworth Summer Theater’s Sound of Music. We have been to Leavenworth Summer Theater’s A Christmas Carol, but we have never gone to one of their outdoor productions. Why did we wait so long? It was a wonderful experience to watch Maria walking down the mountain singing at the start of the show and to see the whole Von Trapp family flee up that same mountain at the end of the show. Great show and Leavenworth Summer Theater is truly Leavenworthy.

Congratulations to Leavenworth Summer Theater, our second Leavenworthy award award winner.
