Sit and stay awhile

Staycation brings all sorts of things to mind. For some it’s about staying home, catching up on long awaited chores and household projects. For others it means packing as much fun into a week at, or near, home as you can. Staycation can also mean avoiding long security lines and hours waiting to board an aircraft by planning your vacation for a destination within a day’s drive.

With increased gas prices and cutbacks in airlines services and routes, regional travel has been making a comeback and we have just the place: Leavenworth, Washington. An easy, scenic drive from just about anywhere in the state, Leavenworth provides a wide variety of delightful experiences and activities. Close enough for a day trip, yet far from the ordinary.

Looking for a party? Leavenworth has a year round calendar chock full of festivals and celebrations. From Oktoberfest in the Fall to the Christmas Lighting Festival in December, the fun never stops in Leavenworth. Drive up for the day or stay for a night or two. You’ll feel like you’ve traveled to another time and place. Because we love Leavenworth, and travel there so often that it feels like home, it’s our first choice for a staycation.

Maifest, Christkindlmarkt, and the Christmas Lighting Festival all provide fabulous parent-child activities. If you decide to stretch your “staycation” into a long weekend or even into a week or two long vacation, check out one of Leavenworth’s family-centered resorts or a rental cabin. We won’t be surprised if your family returns again and again.

Seeking a new connection with nature? Located on the eastern slope of The Cascade Mountain Range, Leavenworth is your gateway to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Make the village or a nearby condominium or rental cabin your home base and explore the Enchantment Peaks and high Alpine Enchantment Lakes region. The Wenatchee National Forest is a treasure. Mountain and rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing, backpacking, hiking and camping are all available in the 4 million acre forest that includes many wilderness areas. Many areas are accessible by permit only.

Leavenworth is an enchanting place. It’s like nowhere else. Come for a day, a night or a week. Return home with new family ties and memories that will last a lifetime. It’s all about being intentional when you plan your very own staycation.

If you have a family pet, Leavenworth is a great place to visit with them. Our Pet-Friendly page is full of ideas and links for those traveling with pets.

Besides traveling to and from Leavenworth and writing about our favorite Bavarian village, I (Renae) am also the Spokane Eastern Washington Travel Examiner. As an Examiner I get to write on anything and everything to do with tourism in and around Washington, east of the Cascades. My favorite topic is Leavenworth and the surrounding area. I’ve published several Examiner articles about Leavenworth and have many more planned.

Leavenworth Autumn Leaf Festival

Friday, March 4th, 2011

We at Accidental Bavarian congratulate the 2011 Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves, Nancy Watson. Each year the Autumn Leaf Festival Association (ALFA) chooses a member of the community to represent the association and the community of Leavenworth. The Royal Lady, along with other members of the association and other community volunteers, travels to communities throughout the Pacific Northwest promoting Leavenworth and inviting folks to enjoy the hospitality of Leavenworth. Mrs. Watson will ride the ALFA’s float in as many as 14 parades throughout the spring and summer.

Mrs. Watson, the 48th Royal Lady, has a long history in Leavenworth, though she has described herself as a comparative newcomer. Her husband, Lynn, was born and raised in Leavenworth. Mr. Watson’s mother, Pauline Watson, was the 1980 Royal Lady. Lynn and Nancy have a long history of community involvement and volunteerism in Leavenworth. The Watsons own Alpen Haus Gifts and the Alpen Rose Inn. Mr. Watson is one of the founding members of the Royal Bavarians, a service organization that supports the Autumn Leaf Festival, among other community projects. Mrs. Watson taught in the Leavenworth School District until her retirement in 2000, where she still serves as a substitute teacher on occasion.

The Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival is Leavenworth’s original festival on a calendar full of them. Established in 1964, the festival celebrates the changing of the seasons. The village is filled with activities, entertainment, food and a grand parade. The family-friendly festival is organized, sponsored and staged by the Autumn Leaf Festival Association (AFLA) in conjunction with members of the community, the Royal Bavarians, Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and the City of Leavenworth.

This year’s Autumn Leaf Festival theme is 80 Years of Winter Sports. 2011 festival dates are September 23-25. The first scheduled float appearance for 2011 is the Tacoma Daffodil Festival Parade, April 9, 2011.
